little love sugar & spice {sour cream sugar cookies} ♥

 


I have been making this sugar cookie recipe for a while and I must say that I have become quite fond of it. Most of the time I prefer sugar cookies with a little more a crisp, but every once in a while these little nuggets are just what I like. The sour cream makes these almost cake-like and the baking powder puffs 'em right up. Nummy :)




Sour Cream Sugar Cookies

1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
1 and 1/2 cups sugar
1 egg, room temperature
1 cup sour cream
pinch of salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
3 and 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon almond extract (you can be creative here, I have done lemon and orange extract too!)

1. Mix together flour, salt, baking soda, and baking powder in a medium bowl and set aside.
2. With an electic mixer on medium, cream the butter and sugar until fluffy.
3. Reduce speed and add egg, increase speed to combine fully.
4. Add the sour cream to the mixture beating until fully combined.
5. Add the vanilla and the flavoring. 
6. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refridgerate until it is workable: about 2 hours* 
7. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees farrenheit. 
8. Roll dough out on a well floured surface to about a 1/4 inch thick. 
9. Cut out hearts, using a floured cookie cutter.
10. Bake on a cookie sheet for 5-6 minutes for smaller cookies, for larger cookies bake for 8-10 minutes.
11. Let the cookies cool completely before frosting.

Sugar Cookie Icing

2 egg whites
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
About 2 cups of powdered sugar*
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1. Beat the egg whites and cream of tartar with a mixer until they are foamy. 
2. Gradually add the powdered sugar and then add the vanilla. Add coloring if your heart desires :)
3. Spread the icing over the cooled cookies using an off set spatula. OR sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar before baking.
